Sterling Tomahawk Pendant with Green Turquoise Nugget

Arthur Lewis

About The Sterling Tomahawk Pendant with Green Turquoise Nugget

Sterling silver from ingot and a green turquoise nugget were used in creating the pendant.  Tomahawk was sculpted from smelted silver and wire.

All the wire decoration is from ingot and some lengths have been hammer flattened and/ or stamped to produce a variety of textures and decorative forms.

Turquoise nugget was merely flattened a bit more on its flattest side, then set in a smooth-edged hand-cut bezel.

Italian tanned leather was hand-cut and braided to create the attractive cord.  The silver closure was designed and made especially for the tips.

Mr. Lewis' work preceded that of the Long family.  His forte was the creation of figures--dancers and kachinas.

About the Artist (20th century, Choctaw) Although cited by both Barton Wright and Gregory Schaaf in their publications revealing American Indian jewelers, relatively little is shared about Art or Arthur Lewis, whose hallmark is an arrow and tepee.

Lewis' Choctaw name was Neetha Loosa, which translates to Black Bear.  He worked as a silversmith from 1929 forward.
